Health-Smart Head Start Workshop

Health-Smart Head Start Workshop

Principal Investigator: Dr. Carolyn M. Tucker
Collaborator: Ms. Ann Crowell, Director of Head Start and Preschool Education for the Alachua County School Board

In recognition of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in September 2012, the UF Health Disparities Research and Intervention Program sponsored a Health-Smart Head Start Workshop for parents and children of the Alachua County Public Schools Head Start Program. The Health-Smart Head Start Workshop was a part of a national effort to eradicate childhood obesity in the United States and ensure young people get a healthy start in life. Parents participated in a workshop to learn strategies to help increase their children’s engagement in health-smart (health promoting) behaviors. The workshop was an abbreviated version of Dr. Tucker’s 6-week Health-Smart Behavior Program, which has been shown to be effective in reducing body mass index and increasing healthy eating and physical activity among families. During the workshop, parents set two health-smart goals for themselves and their child/children to work toward.
