The Bronx Health-Smart Church Program

The Bronx Health-Smart Church Program

Principal Investigator: Dr. Carolyn M. Tucker

The Bronx Health-Smart Church Program was implemented at four churches in Bronx, NY, and is the church-based version of the Health-Smart Behavior Program. Two predominantly African American/Black churches and two predominantly Hispanic/Latino churches were recruited to participate in this program. Pastors and select leaders at each participating church were trained to be Health Empowerment Coaches (HECs) who then implemented the Health-Smart Behavior Program with fellow church members and community members. The main goals of this program were to increase overall health and engagement in health promoting behaviors among racial/ethnic minority groups and low-income individuals and families living in Bronx, NY.
